A Visitor from Australia

The Rev.John Simpson was ordained and moved to the Bahamas and then to Western Australia to take up a post as a young priest. While there he became a close friend of the Brierley family, formally of Rochdale, who had been closely involved in the setting up of the Co-op Movement. B.C.Brierley was a personal friend of the young architect, Edgar Wood, who designed and built Barcroft (Marland, Rochdale) for him.

John was responsible for returning the Brierley family artefacts back to their original homeland in the hope of finding some interested associations in Rochdale. 769 lots of memorabilia went under the hammer at Capes Dunn in  2015 of which several items were purchased by EWS members. This year John has made a personal visit to the UK and EWS member and owner of Barcroft, Georgina, was keen to show him the EW properties in Middleton, especially Long Street and invitations were also accepted by the Mayor (Councillor Ray Dutton) and the Mayoress , Councillor Jim Gartside and his wife Jane a former councillor, were part of a large party attending.IMG_2193a

The Victorian Society Call

As part of the Victorian Society’s AGM weekend, almost one hundred members from all over the country visited the Arts and Crafts Church this afternoon. The programme consisted of a brief resume of the work of Edgar Wood, a look around the church and school and exhibitions. Four groups of approx twenty went on escorted walks to see the Edgar Wood  buildings in the Conservation Area, while those less mobile had a ‘virtual tour’ at the church. Before departing they enjoyed afternoon tea provided by Greater Manchester Building Preservation Trust.

A rewarding afternoon was had, but only possible as a result of all the work by the Edgar Wood Society volunteers: the research group for providing up to date findings and those who wrote and edited new and revised leaflets and guides, those who led the walks and the ladies for providing over 100 cups of tea/coffee and not forgetting those who set up and cleared up after the event. A big thank you.IMG_2169aIMG_2165aIMG_2174aIMG_2172a

Listed Places of Worship Grant – Unsuccessful

For the second year running the Greater Manchester Building Preservation Trust has not been successful in receiving a grant under the Listed Places of Worship scheme for dedicated repairs to roofs, gutters and drains.

The application ticked all the correct boxes and matched funding was in place, being supported by the Edgar Wood Society, Middleton Township and others. This Church is on the National Buildings at Risk Register, yet still did not get grant approval. We are very disappointed.20160621_151452_resizeda                                                                                                      IMG_2068aIMG_2065a

Edgar Wood Society Day Out

Members of the EWS and friends had an excellent day out visiting St.Martin’s at Marple Bridge, St. Mary the Virgin at Buxton, the museum and various delights around the Pavilion Gardens. Thank you to Anthony from St. Martin’s and Eric at St. Mary’s for showing us around and our own Nick Baker for his expert commentary at the venues.

Roof Damage

Between Friday and Saturday morning a stone roof tile slipped and burst through several tiles on the facing roof. The oak peg holding the tile in place had sheared, the remnants can just be seen in the fixing hole. A little more to the left and the stone would have broken through the roof light.Damage 2

Publicity – St. Leonard’s Church and the Golden Cluster

A new leaflet is being distributed across the borough and further afield for visiting Middleton’s Golden Cluster. Look at the events/calendar for visiting times. The Lord Mayor of Manchester accepted a leaflet while visiting the East Lancs Railway and at Middleton’s May day celebrations, Sally was on hand in the Heritage gazebo to pass on a leaflet to Liz McInnes, the MP for Middleton and Heywood.

Manchester Histories Community Award

IMG_1347aIMG_1349a

Christine was nominated by Dave Lees for a Manchester Histories Community Award. Christine was one of three short listed for the Pickstone prize and is shown holding the award for being highly recommended by the judging panel. The ceremony took place in the grand surroundings of banqueting room of the Manchester Town Hall. Dave gave an excellent, timed five minute presentation about Christine’s role in promoting Middleton’s history over the last twelve years and her close involvement in the pending restoration of Long Street Methodist Church and School. Representatives from Middleton’s historical and civic societies and Mr.N.Barton from the planning department of RMBC came to give their support.

Intruders Cause Damage to the Edgar Wood Centre

The building was broken into between Sunday lunch time and Monday morning, January 3-4th. Fortunately nothing was stolen and the intruders did not manage to get into the adjacent Arts & Crafts Church. A lot of damage was done as they forced open internal doors. Emergency repairs had to be made to secure the premises.

The Last Leaf Removal for the Years Ahead

The box gutters of the Edgar Wood Centre have been cleared of leaves for the fourth and final time, this November. Once again this has caused water ingress into the main hall.

However, as a result of the Edgar Wood Society tree appeal and their members generosity, this should now be a problem of the past. Below is a photo of the hall in early November and the same view today – the trees gone!Blog pic 1 IMG_1161a

The Sycamore Trees are being felled

The self sown Sycamore trees that have been causing a problem for more than several years are at last being felled. Overhanging branches and falling leaves have continually blocked the boxed valley gutters with resulting water ingress. The use of ropes, agility and being young help. Local tree surgeons Birtle are doing a good job.IMG_1145b

An Edgar Wood Watercolour Comes Home

A painting by Edgar Wood comes home after 108 years. Joan now living in Seattle, bought the painting in Washington State in 1970 when she was a student. Now down sizing, Joan wanted to find a good home for the artwork and doing a search on Edgar Wood came across our web site, got in touch and the rest is history. Joan AllenbThe painting is of Nozzano Castello, Lucca and to have a closer look at where Edgar Wood travelled check out the link https:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZBhxcTxpN0

Our thanks to Joan for generously donating the picture to the Edgar Wood Society.

“Arts and Crafts Churches, Another 32”

There was a good turn out for the Edgar Wood Society talk by Alec Hamilton on Arts and Crafts Churches. He certainly had the full attention of the audience as we learned about the criteria of what makes an Arts and Crafts Church. The photographs were superb, as was his talk both scholarly and lightened with amusing comments. Alec kindly distributed handouts, listing the churches featured in his talk. We are grateful to Alec for traveling all the way from Gloucestershire to give his talk and look forward to maintaining contact and reading his book in due course. P 22P 44

Edgar Wood Society Annual General Meeting

RichardLee Dill_DSC3878The Edgar Wood Society AGM was well attended, meeting in the lecture room for the first time. At the conclusion of the business session, Richard Fletcher gave an introduction to the Northern Art Workers Guild exhibition, which he and Nick Baker have curated. It was a good opportunity to meet members socially and view the impressive archive assembled to date.

The Organ gets some TLC

organ 1The Peter Conacher & Co organ, installed into the Arts and Crafts Church (Long Street Methodist) in 1930 gets a tune and inspection. The organ builders say this is a fine instrument and would benefit from a good workout. Is there any one out their prepared to give a recital?
